Last week I had to clone a database. I used backup based clone. The files were on the same exadata so I backuped up the files and cataloged them and then switch to the datafile copies with one simple rman command. I like simple and fast commands like this one
RMAN> SWITCH DATABASE TO COPY ;
My problem was the switch statement took a lot of time. When I check the ASH for the RMAN on the this clone database which was in mounted mode I saw that It was waiting in “recovery area” wait events. Most of the time this one -> recovery area: computing obsolete files
recovery area: computing backed up files recovery area: computing dropped files recovery area: computing obsolete files
My solution was simple I disabled the recovery area and the switch to the datafile copies took 5 min not 4 hours 🙂 . It is a new clone database not a real production system so I was able to do that.
